Storytelling week 10: Karna vs. Arjuna

One day a group of gods came to an empty field of land dried and empty due to many decades of droughts. The gods decided to fill this land with life and give it the ability to birth many people, animals, and plantations. The land lived in joy. The people and animal reproduced at exponential rates but one day the people began to notice that there was not enough food being distributed for all people in the land. People began to feel things such as greed and hate. The land quickly filled with disputes and fights. The land slowly began to transform into a land of dictatorship ruled by King Arjuna. The gods looked down at the land in sadness watching it become the complete opposite of what they wanted. In response the set out to create a powerful deity strong enough to bring peace and his name was Karna.
Karna was no ordinary man. The gods gave him a strong armor that covered his entire torso and legs. The gods told him in the skies that he had to come down and rescue the people from the harsh dictatorship of Arjuna. In return for freeing the people of land the gods would allow him to rule of the land and give him the ability to enjoy the gifts of the land.
Karna arrived to the land by a chariot of the gods. He set his quest to arrive at the land by night fall.
He approaches what looks like a large gate that surrounds a large portion of the land. He notices that outside of the gates there is plenty of food and water for the millions of people living within the gates. He comes across what looks like the gates to the inside of the land. He is spotted by a man named Drona that tells him the gods told him about his arrival. Drona tells Karna that Arjuna has tricked the people of the land to believe that there is very limited amounts of food and water. Arjuna has managed to keep them in control by having control of all the food outside of the gates.
Karna infuriated sets march to the castle. Arjuna is startled by Karna’s forceful entrance. Karna explains his reason for coming to the land but Arjuna is reluctant to his explanation. Arjuna pulls out behind his back his amazing swords made of metal known to be indestructible.
The battle begins in a brutal manner. Both are extremely wounded but are unable to quit. Karna has been wounded severely in the arms in legs. It seems as if Karna is beginning to get tired. Karna falls on his back and and is awaiting his death. Arjuna picks up his swords and brings them down with all his force onto the torso of Karna. The crowd is saddened to see what is to come but as the swords hit the armor of Karna the blades shattered like glass.

Karna opens his eyes and noticed he was still alive. Karna finds the will to get up and from the power of the gods he regains his strengths and grabs Arjuna and launches him up to the the sky where the gods will take care of him.

Author’s note

My story is based on Karna: Brave, Generous, Ill Fated Prince. This story deals mainly with Karna as the title mentions. I decided to make my story about Karna because I do not feel as if he received much recognition in many of the Pandava story. This story also makes a lot of references to the Pandava brothers but I decided to omit them all except Arjuna. In this story, just like many other stories, Arjuna and Karna have always hated each other even after finding out that they are brothers. Karna is the one who seems care less about this issue. I was inspired to create this super hero story by the recent movie Batman vs. Superman. I have not watched the movie so I am in no way spoiling the movie. In this story Karna seems like an evil character and Arjuna seems to more of a heroic deity. I decided to reverse this aspect and male Karna the good and Arjuna the bad character. I also decided to give the two characters specific powers that they hold based on the story. Arjuna has an amazing ability to disguise himself and he has amazing weapons while Karna has an amazing armor that helped him defeat Arjuna. The image I used is my favorite picture of the two characters fighting that I have seen. I feel as this picture does not give away a victor and gives the audience the ability to imagine the battle as it happens.

  1. This is a great story. The beginning reminds me of the biblical story of Adam and Eve where everything starts out perfect, but things start going South when greed and selfishness come into play.
Karna was a fantastic character in the Mahabharata, and he would have made a great ally for the Pandavas if he had not been so faithful to his first promise to Duryodhana.

  2. I love how you started your story off at the beginning in a time of plenty so that the reader knows it was not always King Arjuna’s dictatorship. You did a great job retelling the story of Karna. I think you highlighted all of his qualities of bravery and generosity beautifully. The ability to disguise oneself is definitely a sneakier super power so giving this power to the bad character, Arjuna, was a good choice.

  3. I really enjoyed reading this story! It seems like a common occurrence in these stories is for someone to displease the gods, which never works out in the end for that person. Arjuna let greed get the best of him and ended up getting his kingdom taken away from him. The battle was my favorite part of the story. Great job!
