This reading Diary is over the
Public Domain Edition of Mahabharata. These will also be the main scenes I focus
on when I have to retell the story. Its starts off with a description of how
Vyasa was born. Its interesting to see how his mother came to be! It continues
by explaining how Devavrate or Bhishma came to be. His mother was very beautiful
and his dad could never speak bad to her. She had eight total but killed the
first 7. She wanted to kill the eighth but the father intervened angrily. So
the deal between the king and mom was over because he was never to speak bad to
her. This child was Devavrate. The king and Vyasa mother then meet but the
fisherman (Satyavati’s foster father) did not want her to marry the king
because he did not garuntee the throne to the child he would have with Satyavatis.
My favorite scenes are battle scenes.
There is an episode where Bhishma take the daughters of a king named
Kashi to be the wives of the son that King Shantanu and Satyavati procreated
but only two women are allowed to marry Vichitravirya He unfortunately wasnted able
to have children so his mother called upon her first son to Vyasa to take care
of this issue. Pandu is a child that
has sprout from this encounter and is later cursed for killing a sage. Pandus
son’s will eventually come into conflict with the sons of Dhritarashtra, their
cousins the Kauravas. Both groups would eventually be taught by the same
teacher Drona. After being taught they have to display their moves. Kunti the
mother of the Panduvas has another son who comes into battle but the Panduvas
do not know that is one of their borthers. As payment for Dronas lessons he
wants the “royal boys” to help him bring down Drupada who in my opinion sounds
like a childhood bully. This section ends with Duryohana the oldest of the
Kauravas wants to kill the Panduvas and their mother.
