Week 5 Reading Diary Continued: Public Domain Edition of Mahabharata
Part B of the Public Domain Edition of the Mahabharata begins with the burning of Queen Kunti and the Pandavas. Prince
Vidura sends a miner to the house which saves the lives of Queen Kunti and her
children. The whole town believes they have died. I would like to expand about
the battle the family encounters in the wilderness. Bhima one of the Pandava
brothers battles a beast but he eventually meets Hidimbi. This story also
drifts into another story about Nalayani who is a female deity which is known
for having five husbands. The story then moves on to multiple characters but I
am mainly interested in how Arjuna saves Maya’s life and builds a palace for
the Pandavas. The Pandavas over time began to gain lots of power. Duryodhana is
still jelouse about all other peoples success going on around him that he
decided a plan to take Draupadi, Yudhisthira’s wife. It was a dice game which
was rigged by Duryodhana. Duryodhana won but Vidura refused to willing pass
Draupadi down to him. I will also focus on the scene where Bhima curses
Duryodhana for having converted Drauoadi into a slave. From my understanding of
the story I feel like Yudhisthira does not really care much about his ex wife.
In my story I would like to add a specific phrase where Duryodhana taunts Yudhisthira.
“Speak
and say, thou who dost ever speak truly, hast thou lost thy kingdom and thy
brethren and thine own self?” I want to focus on this specific conflict.
Yudhisthira again played a game if dice leading to the exile of the Pandavas
and Draupadi.
