I chose to read The Indian Heroes: Mahabharata- The Princeof Elephant City by C.A. Kincaid. This Versions begins with the description of
how Pandu (king) and Dhritarashtra (blind brother). Pandu ends up having five
kids known as the Pandavas and his blind brother has 100 kids, the Kauravas. Duryodhana
one of the Kauravas was jealous of the Panduvas because they were Drona’s best
students. The story continues similar to the online version of the Mahabharata.
I would like to focus on the monsters Hidimba and his sister who try to eat the
Pandavas. Bhima eventually falls in love with Hidimi. I would also like to
focus on the way the Pandavas compete for Draupadi. Arjuna wins her but is
asked to share her with all his brothers. Draupadi’s father, Dhishtadyumna, doesn’t
like that but agrees to it. I also want to focus on how Arjuna walks in on
Draupadi and Yudhishthira and is forced to be exiled. Something I did not catch
from the first version I read was that Duryodhana had actually given half of
his land to the Pandavas to create a new palace after being exiled. I also want
to focus on Arjuna marrying Ulupi and how he receives his weapons from Agni,
the fire god. Duryodhana’s uncle suggest that Duryodhana ask Yudhishthira to
join a gambling game with him. They know Yudhishthira is unskilled. Duryodhana’s
father frees the Pandavas and returns all of their stuff but Duryodhana suggest
another game of dice which the Pandavas lose again.
